The Word Festival

Words have energy and power with the ability to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate, and to humble."

-Yehuda Berg.

In August we think of schools going back and the end of those lazy days of summer. Back to routine and schedules, but there is still some time to squeeze in some fun! Get along to the first EVER Words Festival in Inverclyde this Saturday the 10th of August in Gourock Park running from 10.30am to 3.30pm. Free admission.

We recently met up with the creative writing group at Inverclyde Shed, facilitated by Donna Bryson of Clearview Minds. The writing group is a new initiative that started in January this year, bringing a group of people together to focus on writing and all its different facets in a relaxed and fun way. Here we are pictured in the Community Gardens at Lyle Gateway, inspired by natures greenery and tranquillity.

On completion of the writing course and an anthology from the group it was suggested that this would continue with a celebration of the power of language through a Words Festival, which is hoped to be an annual event.

The day has plenty to offer everyone from fairy trails to tongue twisters, singing to playing the ukelele, teddy bears picnics to nature walks, all celebrating the heritage and culture of Inverclyde. Be an investigator in the Words Detective Quiz, learn how to say a few lines in sign language or just sample some of the stalls that are on offer. We even have a collection of instruments for you to try out on the day.

As visitors enter the park you will see the produce growing from the efforts of the Sheds gardening group. Sample some of the tastes from nature and take away some recipe ideas. Enjoy the sweetness of nature from our bees’ honey, sweet, pickled apples and for those of you that enjoy the more savoury option pickled onions, piccalilli, kale kimchi, pickled zucchini and sauerkraut.

This is just one of a series of events which are being run by Inverclyde Shed, showcasing the benefits of community groups whereby members Meet, Make, Grow and Share. Become a member and access a whole range of different activities, open to everyone in Inverclyde from 18 years and above.
